Newark’s Public Art: Created With and For Our City
Free Public Art Tour Series for Students, Campus & Community Members
Join us for a special series of free public art tours open to both students and community members. Produced as part of the Rutgers University–Newark course Public Art, Social Practice & Design: Community-Engaged Strategies for Social Impact, led by public art curator Rebecca Pauline Jampol, this program brings the classroom into the city itself.
Across three dates and four tours, participants will explore Newark’s public art through unique, civic-minded programs such as Shifting Radiance, , , and The Fairmount Art Wall. Each tour highlights the initiatives, public–private partnerships, participating artists, and artworks that continue to shape our city—projects truly created with and for our communities.
This program is made possible by Express Newark’s Educational Initiatives. Express Newark’s Free School Initiative is dedicated to building a learning community through a free curriculum that emphasizes art making, critical thinking, and empathy.

The October 7th tour at 3pm will visit the Fairmount Artwall, meeting at 400 W Market St, Newark, NJ 07107. Rain date is Thursday, October 7th.
This groundbreaking partnership between PSE&G, the City of Newark, Adjaye Associates, and local artists transformed a critical energy facility into a civic landmark. With a 48,000-square-foot art wall featuring 16 artists—many Newark-based—the Switching Station is a striking example of infrastructure reimagined through art and design.
